Pathological Alterations of Cation Movements in Red Blood Cells

Abstract
Movements of sodium and potassium across the red blood cell (RBC) membrane are mediated by highly specific mechanisms, some of which are closely linked to cell metabolism. Abnormalities in cation flux have been discovered in the RBC of people with a variety of illnesses. The marked permeability derangements in some hemolytic anemias account quite clearly for the patient's disability. In certain clinical states defects demonstrated in RBC may provide clues to the pathogenesis of membrane lesions in other tissues.
