Abstract
According to the suggestion of a previous report, vitamin E (Aquasol E) has been administered for six weeks or longer to each of four patients having different forms of porphyria, viz, acute intermittent porphyria, variegate porphyria, hepatic coproporphyria, and porphyria cutanea tarda. Any effect of vitamin E on porphyrin metabolism in these four individuals was at the most slight or questionable.
The present patients do not duplicate the four patients of that report, since those investigators did not specify any particular varieties of porphyria that would benefit from vitamin E. In fact, at least three of those patients are genuinely difficult to classify in terms of the correlation of clinical and chemical findings.
