Desquamative Interstitial Pneumonia

Pathological Findings and Follow-Up in 13 Patients

Arthur S. Patchefsky, MD; William Fraimow, MD; Willis S. Hoch, MD

Arch Intern Med. 1973;132(2):222-225.

Abstract

Of 13 patients having desquamative interstitial pneumonia, six patients had abnormal serum antibody levels for extrapulmonary symptoms, while eight patients had interstitial fibrosis as a histological feature. Follow-up has shown that three patients died of disease and one shows progressive pulmonary insufficiency. The presence of pulmonary fibrosis in the biopsy specimen correlated with the clinical outcome.
