Gastrointestinal Cytomegalovirus Infection

Peter Rosen, MD; Donald Armstrong, MD; Nancy Rice, MD

Arch Intern Med. 1973;132(2):274-276.

Abstract

The gastrointestinal tract is one of the less common sites of cytomegalovirus infection. Prior studies indicated that the virus may have a particular affinity for sites of pre-existing ulceration in the intestine and other organs. Observations in the three cases reported here suggest that this may depend on the localization in these ulcers of circulating cells, probably macrophages that are coincidentally infected with cytomegalovirus.
