Abstract
Results of a radioimmunoassay of carcinoembryonic antigen as a diagnostic test for carcinoma of the colon and pancreas are reported. Blood samples were drawm from 162 patients—75 with known or suspected carcinoma of the colon or pancreas, 10 with other gastrointestinal malignant neoplasms, 7 with nongastrointestinal malignant neoplasms, 32 with a variety of nonmalignant gastrointestinal diseases, and 38 with no significant disease. We have not found the assay to be specific for carcinoma of the colon or pancreas and have encountered a significant level of false-positive tests. Further experience is needed before final conclusions can be drawn regarding its usefulness in clinical practice.
