Abstract
We emphasize the importance and difficulty of evaluating hypochondriasis, as distinct from certain other functional somatic complaints, in medical practice. A definition for hypochondriasis is proposed. We outline five troublesome medical responses to hypochondriacal patients, followed by suggestions for management.
