Atherogenic Effects of Anabolic Steroids on Serum Lipid Levels

Abstract

This article reviews the current body of literature linkinganabolic steroids to atherogenic alterations in serum lipidlevels. Anabolic steroids cause marked high-density lipoproteinlevel depression (weighted average, 52%) and severe depressionof high-density lipoproteinb levels (weighted average, 78%)while raising low-density lipoprotein levels an average of 36%.The mechanism of these lipid changes, their time course in relationto anabolic steroid use, and their dependency on route of anabolicsteroid administration are discussed. Interpretation of theobserved lipid level changes in light of the epidemiologic datalinking lipids to coronary heart disease risk is used to estimatethe lipid-based increase in coronary heart disease risk dueto anabolic steroid use.
