Abstract

The literature on outcomes of intensive care for the elderlywith regard to intensive care unit utilization, mortality, hospitalcosts and charges, and quality of life after intensive carewere reviewed. Publications in the English literature, whichevaluated intensive care and included elderly populations, wereobtained from review of Index Medicus and MEDLINE. We concludethat age alone is not an acceptable predictor of critical illnesswith regard to mortality and quality of life of survivors. Atherapeutic trial and appropriately discontinuing life supportmay lead to better utilization of intensive care. Additionaldata are needed on long-term mortality and quality of life afterhospital discharge.
