An Immunologic Mechanism for the Association Between Obesity and Asthma

As an allergist and immunologist interested in the mechanism of development of allergy and asthma, I read with interest the recent report by Camargo et al1 regarding the association of obesity with asthma in women. Wilson and Irwin,2 in the accompanying editorial, identify the limitations of the study, particularly the inherent difficulty in associating 2 common disorders as somehow responsible for each other. Wilson and Irwin offer some possible confounding factors, such as the association of obesity with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and their potential role in the development of asthma symptoms. Despite the known role of inflammation in asthma, Wilson and Irwin2 did not mention possible immunologic mechanisms for this association.
