Antipyretic Therapy Is Important Following Stroke

In their review of antipyretic therapy Plaisance and Mackowiak1 fail to mention the role of such therapy in acute ischemic stroke. It is well recognized that the occurrence of fever is a poor prognostic indicator following stroke,2-4 and is related to the size of the infarcted area.5 There is evidence that treating fever by inducing hypothermia reduces the degree of damage in animal models6 and improves outcomes markedly in humans.7 Experts in stroke treatment now recommend treating raised temperature with antipyretics.8-9 We believe that the authors should have mentioned the role of antipyretic therapy in stroke.
