We read with great interest the recently published article by Bursztyn et al1 as well as previous articles by the same author2-3 and other reports by other authors on the same subject.4-6
All these studies appear to lend credence to the hypothesis that, as happens in the morning after sleep, waking up from an afternoon nap taken at midday after lunch and the duration of the siesta itself may represent significant risk factors for mortality in the elderlyor at least in some groups of them and under certain conditions.
We therefore think that the Salerno School's Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum should be mentioned in the context of these studies, for in this treatise the reasons people should refrain from taking an afternoon nap are stated clearly and accurately.
