Erythema Multiforme Associated With Bupropion Use

Bupropion (Wellbutrin; Glaxo Welcome Inc, Triangle Park, NC) is a popular
antidepressant commonly used for the treatment of nicotine addiction. Common
adverse effects include dose-related seizure disorders and other neuropsychiatric
disturbances.1 A search of the literature
did not disclose any published work linking the use of bupropion with the
development of erythema multiforme.
Report of a Case
A 38-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a 1-day
history of fever and rash. He complained of a tender and mildly itchy erythematous
swelling in the hands and feet and a near-total body rash. He also reported
asthenia, polyarthralgia, chills, and a sore throat. He reported the use of
bupropion (100 mg orally, twice daily) for 2 weeks for the treatment
of nicotine addiction prior to admission. His medical history was unremarkable,
and he was taking no other medications. He claimed tick exposure through his
