Erythema Multiforme Associated With Bupropion Use

Bupropion (Wellbutrin; Glaxo Welcome Inc, Triangle Park, NC) is a popular antidepressant commonly used for the treatment of nicotine addiction. Common adverse effects include dose-related seizure disorders and other neuropsychiatric disturbances.1 A search of the literature did not disclose any published work linking the use of bupropion with the development of erythema multiforme.

Report of a Case

A 38-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a 1-day history of fever and rash. He complained of a tender and mildly itchy erythematous swelling in the hands and feet and a near-total body rash. He also reported asthenia, polyarthralgia, chills, and a sore throat. He reported the use of bupropion (100 mg orally, twice daily) for 21/2 weeks for the treatment of nicotine addiction prior to admission. His medical history was unremarkable, and he was taking no other medications. He claimed tick exposure through his pet dog and denied any drug abuse or sick contacts . . .
