Questioning Race-Based Hypertension Management—Reply

Dr Denberg has raised some interesting points regarding the consensus statement on management of high blood pressure in African Americans.1 The HAAWG set its task on providing the first evidence-based clinical tool for treating high blood pressure in African Americans. Prior to our report, no guidelines existed on treating hypertension in this population, which has a higher rate of cardiovascular events, compared with white Americans.

Unequivocally, the HAAWG believes that the management strategies recommended in our report would be beneficial for all individuals with hypertension. It should be apparent that in no way does our endorsement of these guidelines detract from our position that hypertension be aggressively treated in all Americans with high blood pressure, regardless of race, sex, or age.

While clinicians and researchers certainly need to "acknowledge and grapple with the complexities of race," the consensus statement was not written with the intent of answering these . . . [Full Text of this Article]
