My colleagues and I read with the greatest attention the letter by Dr Jobanputra. Dr Jobanputra is correct in stating that some of the authors were involved in one of the key trials1 cited in our systematic review.2 However, some points that justify why we did not declare any conflict of interests relevant to this article should be clarified.
- The Lancet study1 was completed in 1999, and no further support was obtained after that date from Rottapharm Research, the initial sponsor of the study. It is not a common practice to report, in scientific publications, research grants having been terminated more than 3 years before the publication of an article.
- The Lancet study was contracted by the University of Liege, Liege, Belgium, and notwithstanding that the authors belong to this institution, none of them received any direct or indirect financial compensation for this work.
