We read with great interest the article by Klerk et al1 about thrombosis in patients with a central venous catheter, in which the authors performed a critical review of the published data up to May 2002. At present, to our knowledge, only 2 prospective studies on thromboprophylaxis in cancer patients with a central venous catheter have been published.2-3 In their conclusion, Klerk et al1 highlighted the need for more prospective studies, notably comparing various forms of thromboprophylaxis. We would like to bring to their attention a study that we recently published, comparing for the first time 2 thromboprophylactic approaches.4
According to the definition used by Klerk et al,1 our study was a level 1 study. It was a prospective, randomized, open pilot trial, performed in 59 cancer patients with solid tumors in whom a port catheter was implanted in the subclavian (n = 56) or jugular (n = 3) vein. . . .
