Dairy and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Wrong Conclusions—Reply

Our baseline data summarized in Table 1 of our article1 did not suggest that dairy intake is associated with body mass index. Furthermore, adjustment of body mass index updated during follow-up did not alter the relationship between dairy intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.1 These data suggest that the observed association is not due to favorable effects of dairy products on adiposity, to the contrary of McDougall’s impression about our conclusion. We agree with the 2005 dietary guidelines advisory committee that current evidence is insufficient to claim that milk products are an important means of managing weight.2

Among the factors that tended to be associated with higher dairy consumption at baseline of our study, lower alcohol consumption, higher glycemic load, higher trans-fat intake, and lower ratio of polyunsaturated fat to saturated fat may actually pose an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.1 Nonetheless, we . . .
