Studies of inflammation status in relation to vascular outcomes, using diagnostic tests ranging from leukocyte count determination to assessment of C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration, cellular adhesion molecules, and markers of plaque stability have progressed in recent years. Most recent attention has been on CRP; concentrations in the top third of the population are associated with an increased risk of approximately 50% for first future coronary and stroke events.1
In this issue of the ARCHIVES, Margolis and colleagues2 from the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) Research Group report that a higher leukocyte count is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality among 66 261 women at 40 centers followed in the WHI Observational Study. Study participants were primarily those who inquired but were not eligible, or did not desire, to participate in the WHI clinical trials of hormone therapy and dietary intervention. The major finding of the study . . . [Full Text of this Article] CONSIDERATIONS FOR CLINICAL APPLICATION
