We appreciate the interest and commentary on our description of 45 patients with statin-associated myopathy, identified on review of medical records from over 13 years of inpatient and outpatient data at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, Madison.1 Although previous reports2 of statin-associated myopathy have estimated the frequency of and risk factors for this adverse effect, its natural history is not well understood.
In regard to the comments by Phillips and Haas, we acknowledge that the study was limited by lack of objective measures of muscle function or follow-up creatine kinase levels in all patients. The apparent difference in our conclusions most likely is related to different patient populations. Our study included patients with muscle aches temporally associated with statin use seen at a large medical center.
