I read with great interest the perspective of Eisenberg,1 an American physician, on practicing medicine in Canada. Poignant issues of difference between the 2 health care systems were highlighted. As a Canadian practitioner trained in both (western) Canada and the United States, I need to clarify a few suggestions that were made.
My observation is in agreement that "there are frequent misperceptions on the part of Americans about the functioning of the Canadian healthcare system."1(p282) While Eisenberg1 is practicing in eastern Canada, an area where more publicity about the disadvantages of the Canadian health care system has been displayed, my experience in western Canada has been far different. While the population of western Canada is growing, I have not observed the often-touted extremely long waiting lists reported from eastern Canada.
