How Can Obesity Be Healthy?

I have read with great interest the article "The Effect of Obesity on Disability vs Mortality in Older Americans," and Al Snih and colleagues1 provide an excellent introduction to a controversial topic. However, I must take issue with the authors' conclusion regarding obesity and elderly subjects.

Al Snih et al1 proposed that the association between obesity and mortality is reduced or eliminated in older subjects. This article implies that low body mass index is associated with an increase in disability and mortality in elderly subjects. Several studies prior to this publication have proved that overweight and obesity is positively correlated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality in all ages.
