We appreciate the comments from Schulman. Unfortunately, the data sets we used did not include information on testosterone levels.
We agree with Dyer that obesity is an epidemic and is associated with serious health problems. Our results show that the adverse impact of obesity in elderly subjects is seen in increasing risk of disability but not in risk of mortality. Our findings of reduced or no association of increased body mass index with subsequent mortality in elderly subjects has been reported in several other longitudinal studies.1-5 All of the studies that Dyer cites focused on populations younger than 65 years.
