Does Alcohol Prevent Mortality or Does It Just Prevent Coronary Heart Disease?

I am writing in response to the article by Mukamal et al.1 As a middle-aged health professional myself, who has a glass of wine or even 2 many nights of the week, I was heartened by their report from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study that alcohol consumption might be an adjunct to other heart-healthy behaviors (body mass index [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared] <25, physical activity, not smoking, and a healthy diet) in preventing myocardial infarction. But this report did not provide any data on overall mortality.
Was there a corresponding reduction in overall mortality in those individuals who consumed alcohol? Or was there an increase in deaths from cirrhosis, gastrointestinal tract bleeding, accidental deaths (including motor vehicle crashes), and suicide?
