We commend Fernandez and colleagues¹ on their study of house member awareness of older inpatients' risks of hazards of hospitalization. This study clearly highlights the need for rigorous educational interventions for internal medicine residents that aim to improve core geriatric inpatient skills. We agree that attending physicians should serve as teachers of teamwork and role models of communication. However, we also believe that teaching attending physicians have a responsibility to educate residents regarding geriatric principles of hospital care. This is especially important given the increasing use of academic hospitalists and a nationwide shortage of geriatricians to meet the needs of an aging population.^2-3 Ensuring that teaching hospitalists receive the necessary training and tools to care for hospitalized older medical patients is especially critical.
