We appreciate our colleagues' concerns. The purpose of our study was to determine if house staff members were aware of the potential risk factors for developing hazards of hospitalization in their patients.1 It was not to determine the potential mediators of the observed findings or to compare the findings with those of other health care providers.
Although unpublished, we presented these questions to program directors at the plenary session of the Association of Program Directors in Medicine, who used an audience response system to estimate what percentage of their residents would correctly answer each question. The results made it clear that the published findings were not unique to the institution where the study was conducted.
