In reply
Williamson and colleagues provide an interesting additional context for our findings, including the recent reports of noncardiac intensive care unit patients having a high incidence of thrombocytopenia that is associated with poor outcome. Differences between these reports and our study1 include the following: (1) our patients were generally not intensive care unit patients, (2) our patients had all received heparin therapy for at least 4 days, (3) our patients included cardiac patients, and (4) our sample size was larger than all these other studies combined.
We considered the use of APACHE II for risk adjustment but elected not to use it because APACHE II and Trauma scores are relevant to critically ill intensive care unit patients.
