Weinreb and colleagues correctly point out that many cases of GD type 3 involve seriously ill children with multiple symptoms affecting the hematopoietic, lymphatic, and the neurological organ systems. In our study, we assessed risk of malignant disease among adult (age 18 years) male military veterans admitted to VA hospitals with a GD diagnosis.1 Individuals with early-onset severe GD are likely not included in this study because they were almost certainly disqualified from military service in younger years.
Weinreb et al also raise 2 questions about the number of individuals with GD and the applied underlying ICD codes in our study. Our answers follow.
