COMMENTS & OPINIONS
Lipid Fractions and Survival in Older Men

William B. Greenough III, MD; Thomas Finucane, MD

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 139 words of the full text and any section headings.

In the article "Cholesterol Fractions and Apolipoproteins as Risk Factors for Heart Disease Mortality in Older Men,"1 the authors fail to include data on overall mortality in their presentation, yet a heading in Figure 2 suggests that the total number of deaths has been reported. This sort of analysis excludes what is the goal of most people, to stay alive, and perpetuates the error that suggests a drug may save your life without presenting the actual overall mortality data. Our question to the authors is, what are the results if analyzed with respect to overall mortality? Is this another case for which the operation was a success but the patient died?
