Which Mediterranean Diet in the Management of Metabolic Syndrome?

We read with interest the article by Salas-Salvadó et al1 describing the potential usefulness of a traditional Mediterranean diet enriched with nuts in the management of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). The effects of the interventional diets used in the study by Salas-Salvadó et al1 are somewhat less than expected: according to a recent analysis, the 3 intervention studies that were specifically conceived to test the effect of dietary or lifestyle changes on the prevalence of MetS produced a weighed mean resolution rate of the syndrome of 25% (range, 20%-48%).2 Interestingly enough, the intervention diets adopted in the 3 studies were similar to Mediterranean dietary patterns.
