It is not surprising that the pericardium is involved in infectious mononucleosis, a disease of such protean manifestations. It is surprising that such a small number of cases of pericarditis associated with infectious mononucleosis have been reported. To date only 11 cases are in the literature. Pericarditis has been reported in association with other conditions, such as primary atypical pneumonia,¹ upper respiratory infections,² epidemic myositis,³ lymphogranuloma venereum,⁴ sinusitis,⁵ and pharyngitis.⁶

It is the purpose of this report to present a case of pericarditis associated with infectious mononucleosis and to review the cases previously reported.

A 22-year-old white man was admitted to the hospital on Oct. 21, 1956, with the chief complaint of severe crushing substernal pain of 10 hours' duration.
