The present monograph is based on a study of over 300 cases of sarcoidosis seen by the authors. This unusually large number of cases reported from one institution results from the affiliation of a sanitarium for chronic eye disease with the Department of Medicine at Freiburg University, Germany. The authors report an incidence of bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy in slightly over 6% of 5000 patients with chronic eye disease. During the course of observation in most of these roughly 300 patients the pulmonary findings were interpreted as manifestations of sarcoidosis. In 80 the diagnosis was histologically ascertained. The radiographs of these patients were used exclusively for the illustrations of this atlas.

The illustrated portion of the book is preceded by a short historical review of sarcoidosis.
