Biliary cirrhosis* is a pathologist's term to describe a simple pattern of cirrhosis within the liver characterized by an increase of fibrous tissue in the portal areas, a variable degree of bile stasis, and a preservation of the lobular pattern. A number of different diseases may give rise to this pattern. Each of these diseases within the liver has certain characteristics of its own that enable one to distinguish several types of biliary cirrhosis. In other words, biliary cirrhosis is a collective term to include several types of liver disease. The purpose of this report is to describe briefly the characteristics of each of the types that comprise the whole group. This may be of considerable interest to the younger pathologist who must rely largely on patterns for his histological diagnosis.
