Jackson, Parkinson, Holmes, Sherrington, Horsley, and Walshe are names chosen more or less at random to illustrate the high quality of the English school of neurology. The task of selecting papers to celebrate the eightieth birthday of Sir Gordon Holmes presented to Sir Francis Walshe an extremely difficult task, for in neurology his name is written large. Clinical neurology has always held a fascination for those with keen analytical minds. Good observers, with the infinite patience to do careful and repeated neurological examinations and follow the natural history of disorders of the nervous system to their final outcome, have deciphered the relationship between lesions and abnormal signs and symptoms. One of the few useful medical by-products of recent wars has been the multitude of patients with a great variety of penetrating wounds of the head.
