This book has a fascinating title. One opens it in anticipation of seeing the spector of death and destruction produced by physicians, even as they are aiming their best blows with appropriate therapy. The same general theme I have dealt with in an essay entitled, "Recent Setbacks in Medicine." The author of this book, however, makes it quite clear that he is concerned with mishaps which are accidents rather than errors, complications inherent in the employment of various medicines and procedures which must be calculated in weighing the risk of any therapy against the dangers of restraint or neglect. The book is an extension of an article on the same topic which was published under the stimulus of a distinguished consultant to the Armed Forces in the New England Journal of Medicine.
