It is fitting that physicians of Mount Sinai Hospital who have been so closely associated with advancing our knowledge of systemic lupus erythematosus should have produced this distinguished monograph, another in the series of scholarly medical reviews from the Mount Sinai Hospital group. Here we have concentrated into small compass surprisingly up-to-date information about this most distressing and puzzling disease. Morphologic pathology and the physiochemical pathology provide the background. Many of the body's metabolic errors in this disease are set forth in great clarity. But as the several papers so well dislcose, progress in understanding the disease has brought us only to the doorstep. No one has entered the house wherein resides an explanation of the causative mechanisms.
