It may seem incredible that anyone could write a whole large book, especially if it is a brilliant and beautiful book, about a single painting, but that is exactly what William S. Heckscher has done with Rembrandt's celebrated portrait of the famous dissection from which the book's title comes. This volume will become a collector's item. It would adorn the library of artist, physician, scholar, teacher, in fact anyone who draws pleasure and inspiration from that fusion of knowledge, skill, and wisdom which makes up the scholarship and love that have gone into the production of this superb volume. I can only express sorrow that I did not know Professor Heckscher when he was a colleague here on the campus of the University of Iowa, where he did much of the work for this book.
