This book is not for the casual reader desiring to be led painlessly into an understanding of the complexity of mucopolysaccharide structure and biochemistry. Rather it is a transcription, only slightly edited, of a working conference of twenty-five investigators of different disciplines who have been actively engaged in the field. Discussion was lively, with many participants interrupting the course of presentations with pertinent questions and relevant observations. In the printed proceedings, this interchange of speakers leads to fragmentation of continuity which some readers will find disturbing. This style of publication does not provide the reader with new facts in the most straightforward manner but does indicate areas of controversy and contradiction and emphasizes research trends and developments.
