For those who have been searching in vain for a comprehensive and authoritative point of reference concerning the biology of the pleuropneumonia-like organisms there is now one available. This report is the first of its kind ever to be assembled. It is the collected papers presented at a symposium which was sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences in January, 1959. A majority of the outstanding workers in this field contributed to this publication. A survey of this assembled material will undoubtedly impress the reader with the surprisingly large amount of available information concerning these obscure and unusual agents. Closer scrutiny, on the other hand, will emphasize the magnitude of the work yet to be done, particularly in regard to the relationship of these microorganisms to human disease.
