The term "pterinoid" is proposed for compounds with the pterin ring skeleton, by analogy with "steroid" and "carotinoid." Developments of the past ten years in the chemistry of the K vitamins are succinctly presented. The structural differences between the K vitamins, in relation to their biological properties and to menadione, are described. In a comprehensive chapter the role of hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism is discussed. Among many interesting aspects are endocrine influences, genetic defects, and neoplasia in relation to activity of this enzyme.
