The recrudescence of syphilis noted in previous reviews¹ is of paramount interest in this 26th annual survey of syphilis. This is evidenced by an avalanche of items in both lay and semi-medical press. For example: The Hydra's Back in Business (April 18, 1960, Medical Tribune); Venereal Ills Held a Big Problem Still (New York Times, January 24, 1960); V.D. Up (Time, February 29, 1960); Syphilis is Found on Rise in Nation (New York Times, February 24, 1960); Rising Vene-real Disease is Public Health Menace (The Evening Bulletin [Philadelphia] October 15, 1959). These notices, observed in a limited area, can be multiplied by the myriads of news media all over the country.
