The question of what is a lethal dose of whole-body radiation for man is doubtless compounded by factors of age, sex, state of health, and nature of treatment given following exposure. The question is, however, of some pertinence since it affects plans for medical care following radiation disaster as well as the proper selection of treatment for patients that suffer marrow aplasia following therapeutic radiation exposures. In the infant reported here, marrow function returned following a midline air dose of 1,082 roentgens. The treatments given and the implications of the results obtained are discussed.
Report of Case
The patient, a 5-month-old female infant, was admitted to the hospital on February 8, 1959, because of an illness of one week characterized by pallor and petechiae. Physical examination showed enlargement of the spleen and liver. The white blood cell count was 258,000 per cubic millimeter, and 98% of these were blast cells
