This book is the sixth of a series of conferences on cold injury sponsored by the Josiah Macy, Jr., Foundation. This conference was primarily concerned with the response of man, as a biologic organism, to the stress of a cold environment. Local tissue cold injury, i.e. frostbite, has been discussed in the preceding conferences.

This book comprises eleven presentations with questions and discussion during the presentations. On occasion the style is confusing to the reader. However, it has the advantage of presenting to the reader a clear concept of what the present thought is on the subjects discussed.

The presentations Living on the South Polar Ice Cap and Medical Experiences at McMurdo Sound concern the findings and experiences of two physicians during a year spent in Antarctica. Their experience would be of great value to any physician stationed in either the Antarctic or Arctic and are interesting reading.
