Miss Cross has set out to provide the medical author with an all-inclusive reference book, containing, "... all the information which an author needs to initiate and carry through a writing project for journal or book publication." She has very nearly succeeded. She guides the reader through the various stages of planning, collecting material and references, and writing the paper or book, and provides a list of reference books on statistics, printer's jargon, medical illustration, etc. For the neophyte or others still unsure of basic grammar, she devotes nine chapters to a medically slanted review of construction of paragraphs, sentence revision, words, titles, styling, capitalization, numbers, spelling, symbols and abbreviations, and punctuation.
Even the most experienced medical writer will find much of value in the last two sections, Illustration, and Editing. The high professional standards demanded today in tables, charts, photographs, and drawings of all kinds are explained clearly and are
