Treatment with Tolbutamide

Although only 73 cases of concurrent Addison's disease and diabetes mellitus were found in the medical literature, reports are increasing in frequency within recent years and so also the likelihood that it will be met in ordinary medical practice. Peculiar difficulties arise in the management of this combination which might not be anticipated from the problems of handling the 2 diseases individually, as demonstrated by the case reported herein.

In 1866 Ogle¹ reported unprecedented findings in a patient with diabetes mellitus who also had bilateral tuberculous destruction of the adrenal glands. Only one other case was reported within the same 25 years,² and the next 25 years produced only 2 more case reports. In the third quarter-century (1916-1941) 12 reports appeared, while in the ensuing 17 years to the present time at least 56 more instances have been described.
