This review concerns the published transactions of the first of five scheduled conferences on genetics, held under the auspices of the Josiah Macy, Jr., Foundation. These multidisciplinary meetings were organized by ex-Macy Medical Director Frank Fremont-Smith and Chairman James V Neel, who head an impressive list of conference participants. For the reader who is not acquainted with the format of the Macy conference transactions—beware!
