All the people, students and faculty alike, who got to hear Dr. Viets' Mayo Memorial Lecture at Dartmouth College on October 21, 1958 were lucky. Since most students and doctors the world over did not hear this memorable address, it is a very happy circumstance that a somewhat expanded version, vividly illustrated with photographs of a number of Viets' medical heroes, has been published by the Dartmouth Publications. It would be an inspiring gift for someone thinking of medicine as a career, any undergraduate medical student, or for that matter any physician who is interested in the rich historic and cultural background of medicine. The book gives one the sensation that Dr. Viets is taking us through his favorite collection of books pointing out the rare ones and his special favorites.
