Herbert Evans, the well-known anatomist and endocrinologist, has achieved distinction in several lines: as book collector, biologist, and historian of science. But he will also be remembered as the founder of the History of Science Dinner Club which has been active on the Berkeley campus of the University of California for about 30 years. To help celebrate the 25th anniversary of this club Dr. Evans brought out this volume. The essays collected in this book were read at meetings of the club. Their subjects range far and wide over the broad realms of science. Unfortunately their date of delivery is not recorded, so it is not always possible to tell whether any oversight or omission represents failure to correct the essays in the light of recent developments or represents unawareness. Brunswick's essay on "Ontogenetic and Other Developmental Parallels to the History of Science" loses some of its force by failing
