Writing book reviews has a strange usufruct. It brings me a large company of companions for some of whom, as one has so nobly put it, I serve as a literary conscience. People share with me their favorites and want me to see them brought to the attention of the readers of this Book Review Section. There is also a group wonderfully sensitive to errors of one sort and another who nimbly point mine out to me, gleefully, apologetically, or occasionally vindictively. I am grateful for help no matter what the source; and I do my best to bear witness during the recurring seasons to the chastening fact that man is not infallible. Some friend put me on the trail of F. L. Lucas for which I am most grateful.
