In 1957, the Diet and Coronary Heart Disease Study Project of the Department of Health of the City of New York was organized to evaluate the role of diet1,2 in the prevention of clinical coronary heart disease. In 1959, we reported3 the effect of our prudent diet on the serum cholesterol levels of 79 normal weight men, 50-59 years of age, who had adhered to the diet for at least 6 months. We later extended this report to 97 men who had followed the diet for at least 6 months and to 54 for at least 1 year.4 The present study deals with the overweight segment of our 50-59-year-old group and the effect of the prudent reducing diet on serum cholesterol levels.5
