This contribution is an attempt to review the current status of determination of hormones in plasma and whole blood. Discussions of levels which are present under normal and abnormal circumstances are included. Where information is available concerning structure, secretion rate, metabolism, and disposition, these have also been reviewed.

The title is the same as that of a recent Ciba Symposium. Although that volume was less comprehensive in character, some unfortunate confusion may result in the minds of certain readers.

Each area in which methods are available for the assay of hormones in plasma, blood, or tissue has been reviewed in a separate chapter. Each is presented by one of the authorities in the field, but like all such group efforts, there is a wide variation in the character and quality of the critical review which has been accomplished.
