People in academic life, academic medicine especially, may wonder sometimes about the origin of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America. Who was behind it? How did it develop? I picked up a copy of Flexner's Biography of Pritchett more because I wanted to see how Flexner made out as a biographer than because of any particular yearning to know more about Pritchett. This book, written in a very matter of fact way, one might almost say in an austere style, gives the salient points of the life of a man who helped Andrew Carnegie put a great many of his benefactions to work to better the lot of academic people in this country. Pritchett is an excellent example of a person rising from a very unpretentious origin, a state of affairs also well exemplified by the Flexner family.
